Commission: March, 2025 - 'Sundance' | Original Australian Bull Painting

For this commission I had 2 reference photos available to work from. I set about trying to merge the two images in an attempt to capture not just his features, but some of his character.

Obviously, I needed to paint a white bull. But when I looked at ‘Sundance’ I didn’t just see ‘a white bull’ - I saw all the colours! To help create areas of interest throughout I concentrated on the colours contained in his tips, the shadows and his highlights.

We decided to use a dark background to really add some depth and drama to the work. The combination of Mineral Blue & Prussian Blue was perfect 

‘Sundance’ was a champion Charolais in real life and a stunner to paint.

I am really grateful for having had this opportunity to step into the land of Bull Portraiture & really enjoyed this one
