Fishery Road | Fine Art Reproduction
This work was my first attempt at capturing the light and shade of the cliffs at Cania. So, I packed all my materials up - paint , brushes, water and full-size canvas threw them in the back of the ute and set about doing some plein air painting. I thought – I’ll just pull up on the side of the road somewhere and start painting. Too easy!! It wasn’t until I had unpacked everything, and started to consider the composition of the canvas, that I realized just how much traffic that bitumen road through Cania Gorge see’s everyday! And…..I wasn’t up for an audience. So, back I went, threw all the materials in the back of the ute again, and headed off for a much quieter location….. as it turns out…. Up Fishery Road. I bunkered down up there for the day, without a soul to be seen in front of this amazing cliff.
This work gets better the more room you give it – up close and it’s a myriad of lines, shapes and colours. Step back and you find the shadows give the work a new three-dimensional quality. We fought a little, halfway through the making of this – we had some feisty conversations! I had to put it away for a while and then see it with fresh eyes anew. It was worth all that frustration and perseverance because now I really do love the colours in this work. I had to get this first piece right, because it really set the tone for the colour pallete of the remaining series.
